Through It All

How many times has something absolutely terrible happened to you, yet you later realize it wasn’t all that bad? That things turned out okay? That the difficulty actually brought out good things in your life? Or helped you come to some understanding you never would have otherwise?

I’d venture to say that very few things are “all bad.” We get mixed packages. A box of chocolates. It’s easy to focus on those nasty ones with strawberry filling and wonder why you ended up with that box.

In my life, even the things that were the most rough to go through taught me some of the deepest and most beautiful truths I’ve ever learned. About forgiveness. The enduring qualities of love. And that God’s presence is truly everywhere. He’s with you through it all. Even in the darkest places. The saddest or most tragic.

So many things really are, as Laura Story sang, “Mercies in Disguise.”

“What if your blessings come through raindrops?

What if your healing comes through tears?

What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know you’re near?

What if trials of this life are your mercies in disguise?”

Whether your time of sorrow is an outward tragedy or difficulty that everyone sees and knows, or it is a dark night of the soul invisible to all yet every bit as real, know that there is hope. It is not the end. And beauty will come through it all.
